haishop

Souvenirs are a way to remember. We at haishop want you to remember Japan as a place where we create beautiful products and strive to improve our communities and live sustainably.

In this diverse, rapidly-changing modern world, it is easier to settle for what is convenient than to strive for what is best. Haishop is about positive steps toward creating a happier present for our community, and a brighter future for our children.

We can do that by living every day in a socially-conscious way. Everything we do has an impact, and even small impacts add up.

Our goal at haishop is to provide visitors with sophisticated, well-designed souvenirs, as well as to support our community.

The United Nations has set Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a base for building a better future for our communities, and haishop is working with those SDGs to do our part in that effort. We are a brand with a social conscious – and a social impact. We are proving that even a souvenir shop can have a positive role to play in making our communities stronger and happier.

At haishop, we are using these 17 SDGs as guides in the selection of souvenirs that we offer. In doing so, we hope to secure a stable sales channel, creating revitalized and sustainable communities, by stimulating continued growth and financial stability.

In this way, we will not only be offering beautiful souvenirs to our customers, we will be supporting efforts to resolve our communities’ social issues. Those issues include declining industries, unnecessary food waste, the unemployment of people with disabilities, various environmental issues, and issues regarding regional revitalization.

These are all challenging problems, but by offering products with positive social impacts in mind, and by telling the stories behind the creation of the products, we will be able to show all the ways in which these problems can be resolved in creative, market-friendly and community-sustaining ways.

In the long term, we are working with artisans and other socially-responsible groups to create products that will have a social impact, and everything we do is moving in this direction.

But beautiful souvenirs don’t have to have a social purpose; they can be a pleasure on their own terms, and we have many products that are precious just for themselves. But we at haishop strive to add our values of sustainability and quality so that those memories continue to have depth, meaning and an enduring sense of joy for many years to come.

The time it takes to establish the processes and find the materials required to create these products means that we will begin haishop by offering a mix of these original souvenirs with a selection of hand-crafted Japanese products, hand-curated by haishop. We will offer nothing mass-produced.

Our criteria at haishop, in everything we offer, include the right combination of fine material, thoughtful concept and creative, original design. These are combined to create an inventory of culturally-relevant products that are made in Japan or feature Japanese motifs.

This sophisticated curation of products allows us to create a well-rounded experience for our customers. Purchasing artisan-produced products at haishop is like investing in one-of-a-kind pieces of art, with a substantial portion of the proceeds being returned to the craftspeople themselves.

It is our hope that we can disseminate Japanese culture to all those who purchase products from haishop, while supporting some of the finest artisans in Japan. Whatever the source of the product, we are confident that our curation of these high-quality Japanese souvenirs will resonate with people around the world.

Project 01 Kyo Yuzen Eye Mask

Kyo Yuzen is a series of processes for dying silk that produces complexly layered, vivid designs. It was developed in the mid to late 17th century, during the Edo period, in Japan. Miyasaki Yuzensai (1654 – 1736), who had a reputation for exquisitely drawn, self-produced folding fans, was encouraged by his patrons to apply his skills to kimono design.

His name quickly became synonymous with top class kimono design in Kyoto, leading to the development of his own unique style. Using his name-sake and it’s place of origin, Kyo (Kyoto)-Yuzen (Yuzensai) was born.

This centuries-old practice was once at the height of style, offering thousands of jobs to skilled craftsman, all over Japan.

However, there is a far different reality today; artisan markets in Japan are diminishing. Artisan-made, traditional Japanese crafts aren’t selling.

Craftsman working in the field of Yuzen dying are struggling to survive in our modern day economy. The days of woman owning multiple customized Kimono, have come and gone, and these skilled artisans are left working out of their homes, often from one job to the next.

Younger generations are moving into bigger cities and accepting jobs with more stable salaries in modern industries. Newer generations are leaving behind the generational tradition of continuing their relatives efforts, leaving these specialized craft jobs in jeopardy.

Project 02 ReFOOD

Agriculture in Japan is heavily regulated, and because of strict guidelines many tons of delicious fruit and vegetables are thrown away every day.
ReFOOD captures the best of these agricultural products before they become waste and turns them into delicious dried food.
ReFOOD – with no more ingredients than

Project 03 Siinomi Sweets

Siinomi Kai is a group established by the parents of disabled children who have graduated from the Siinomi School in Kawasaki. The goal was to create a business where the former students, now adults, could earn decent wages and live independently.

But while it is important to us to help the students make their way in the world, our collaboration with the studio isn’t all about who makes the sweets. We decided to sell Confectionary Studio Siinomi sweets because they’re just so good!

The additive-free baked sweets – high quality cookies and rusk – are so delicious that we at haishop want as many people as possible to be able to taste them. Thus, our collaboration with the studio.

The founder of Confectionary Siinomi Studio has loved making sweets since childhood, and created the recipes himself, made with high-quality ingredients, and no additives. We can taste his care and attention to quality.

But despite their high quality, the success of Confectionary Studio Siinomi is in doubt. The staff and many employees are getting older, and because he thus far has no successor, the founder is concerned about the confectionary’s ability to support the students in the future.

Haishop wants Confectionary Siinomi Studio find new customers and to be able to tell its story, so that its good work – and its delicious sweets! – will live on under a new director, offering new work, and new sweets, to a new generation.
